Your Pelvic Floor: Support for Pregnancy, Birth & Beyond

We don’t often talk about the pelvic floor until something feels off—but during pregnancy and the postnatal period, it deserves our attention, care, and love.

This group of muscles plays a huge role in birth, recovery, and everyday wellbeing.

Understanding your pelvic floor and how to gently support it through yoga can make your pregnancy more comfortable, your birth more empowered, and your postnatal recovery more complete and overall a much better fourth trimester.

What Is the Pelvic Floor, and Why Does It Matter?

Your pelvic floor is a hammock-like group of muscles that sits at the base of your pelvis. It supports your bladder, uterus, and bowel, and it stretches to allow your baby to be born.

During pregnancy, your pelvic floor is under extra pressure as your baby grows and your posture shifts. After birth, it needs time, attention, and gentle movement to recover.

Pelvic Floor Care During Pregnancy

Pregnancy yoga session

Yoga during pregnancy can:

  • Improve awareness of the pelvic floor

  • Learn to gently engage and relax (both are equally important!)

  • Help prepare these muscles for birth

  • Reduce the risk of pelvic floor dysfunction postnatally

Pelvic Floor Healing Postnatally

After birth, whether you had a vaginal birth or a caesarean, your pelvic floor needs time and kindness.

Postnatal yoga can:

  • Rebuild strength slowly and safely

  • Improve circulation to the pelvic area (essential for healing)

  • Ease symptoms like heaviness, leaking, or weakness

  • Support core re-connection and overall alignment

We always begin with breath, awareness, and subtle engagement—never forcing. Your body has done something incredible, and recovery takes time.

Why Yoga Helps So Much

Yoga isn’t just about flexibility—it’s about connection. By tuning into your breath, posture, and sensations, you build a relationship with your pelvic floor that goes beyond Kegels. You learn to listen, respond, and move in a way that supports healing.

Whether you're pregnant or newly postnatal, gentle yoga helps you:

  • Trust your body

  • Feel strong from the inside out

  • Move with more comfort and confidence
