Myth: “You Need to Be Flexible to Do Pregnancy Yoga”

This is one of the most common things I hear from pregnant mums before they join my pregnancy yoga classes:

“I’m not flexible enough for yoga.”

Let me kindly contradict this, you do not need to be flexible to practice pregnancy yoga. Not even a little bit.

Pregnancy Yoga Is NOT About Touching Your Toes

Pregnancy yoga isn’t about fancy poses, bendy bodies, or pushing yourself into shapes. It’s about supporting your changing body, your nervous system, and your baby.

Pregnancy is not the time to force flexibility. Your body THANKS TO THE HORMONE RELAXIN, is already becoming more mobile and flexible, so what it really needs is stability, awareness, and trust.

Yoga meets you exactly where you are, whether that’s feeling stiff, tired, emotional, strong, or somewhere in between.

Yoga Is About Listening, Not Performing

In my pregnancy yoga classes, there is no pressure to “keep up” or do things perfectly. Every body, every pregnancy, and every day is different, you can always choose with modifications works best for your changing body and growing baby.

Some days you might move more.

Some days you might rest more.

Some days you might just breathe.

You don’t come to change your body, you come to connect with it, with your baby and with your own mind.

How Pregnancy Yoga Actually Helps

Rather than focusing on flexibility, pregnancy yoga supports:

  • Breathing for labour and birth

  • Pelvic awareness and mobility

  • Strength for supporting your growing bump

  • Nervous system regulation

  • Confidence and trust in your body

  • Mental preparation for birth and postpartum

These are skills you carry with you far beyond the mat, into birth, early motherhood, and the postnatal period.

Preparing for Birth Is More Than Just Movement

This myth is something I also talk about on my podcast, where we bust common pregnancy and birth misconceptions and bring the focus back to real preparation, physically, mentally, and emotionally.

If you’re looking for more personalised support, my 1:1 birth preparation sessions are a beautiful way to explore breathing techniques, movement, mindset, and questions specific to your pregnancy and birth hopes.

There’s no “ideal” body you need to have to prepare for birth, just a willingness to listen to yourself.

You Are Already Enough to Start

If you’ve been holding back from pregnancy yoga because you think you’re not flexible enough, consider this your invitation.

You don’t need to change your body to join. You don’t need experience. You don’t need to know what you’re doing.

You just need to show up, for yourself and your baby.

You can explore my pregnancy yoga classes, listen to my podcast, or book a 1:1 birth preparation session via my website by emailing me at mamastayhealthy@gmail.com
