Why the Body Feels So Stiff After Birth—and What Can Help in your Fourth trimester

After the incredible effort of giving birth, many new mothers are surprised by how stiff and tight their bodies can feel during your fourth trimester.

You’ve just done the most powerful thing—and yet, everything might feel rigid, sore, and unfamiliar. This stiffness isn’t a sign that something’s wrong. It’s your body asking for gentle attention and support as it recovers.

Let’s talk about what’s happening, and what can help you reconnect with movement and yourself in a kind, nourishing way.

Why You Might Feel So Stiff Postnatally

  1. You’ve Been Through a Lot

PhysicallyWhether your birth was quick, long, surgical, or spontaneous—your body has opened, stretched, shifted, and maybe torn or been stitched. It’s healing, and that takes time.

  2. Hormonal Shifts Are Huge

After birth, your hormone levels change rapidly. This can affect your joints and ligaments, leading to feelings of stiffness and reduced flexibility.

  3. Holding, Feeding, Rocking, Repeating

Newborn care often means hours of staying in one position: sitting, holding, feeding, not moving much. It can lead to tight shoulders, sore hips, and a general sense of stiffness.

  4. Your Body's Alignment Has Changed

During pregnancy, your posture shifts to accommodate your growing baby. After birth, your muscles and joints need time and support to find their new alignment.

Gentle Ways to Support Your Body After Birth

  • Start with Breath

Deep, belly breathing helps reconnect you to your core, calm your nervous system, and gently awaken the pelvic floor.

  • Small, Mindful Movements

Think gentle stretches, supported yoga poses, and slow walks. Nothing fast, nothing forceful. Just kind, consistent movement that feels good.

  • Open the Chest, Release the Shoulders

Try heart-opening poses like supported fish or gentle shoulder rolls. They can bring huge relief from feeding posture fatigue and upper body tension.

  • Pelvic Floor & Core Awareness

Even before doing formal "exercise," simply reconnecting with your breath and learning to gently engage and release the pelvic floor can be powerful.

  • Postnatal Yoga

Gentle yoga specifically designed for the postnatal body helps ease stiffness, build strength, and create space in the body for healing and flow.

You’re Not Meant to Do This Alone
