Why Postnatal Yoga Is More Than Just Exercise

The early weeks and months after birth are a whirlwind of emotions, physical changes, and new beginnings. It's a time of healing, learning, and deep transformation—not just physically, but emotionally too. That’s why postnatal yoga isn’t just about getting your body "back"; it’s about reconnecting with yourself in a whole new way.

Mariella's postnatal yoga classes are designed to support you on every level: body, mind, and soul.

1. Emotional Recovery & Support

Your birth experience, no matter how it unfolded, can leave you feeling raw, empowered, confused, joyful—or all of the above. Postnatal yoga offers a safe space to simply be. Through movement, breathwork, and stillness, you’re invited to process and release whatever you’re holding onto, and to be met with compassion and care.

2. Rebuilding Strength with Awareness

Your body has done something extraordinary, and it deserves gentle, intentional movement to rebuild strength. Postnatal yoga focuses on:

  • Core and pelvic floor recovery

  • Strengthening the back and shoulders (especially important for all that feeding and carrying!)

  • Reconnecting with breath and posture

It’s not about “bouncing back” but rather moving forward with awareness and kindness.

3. Pelvic Floor Health

The pelvic floor goes through a lot during pregnancy and birth. In postnatal yoga, we work with breath-led movements and subtle awareness to gently reawaken and strengthen these vital muscles. This isn’t high-impact—it’s deeply restorative and vital for long-term wellbeing.

4. Bonding With Your Baby (and Yourself)

If you bring your baby along to class, postnatal yoga is also a beautiful space to bond through touch, eye contact, and shared calm. But even without baby in the room, this time is a chance for you to reconnect with your new role, your changing body, and your evolving identity as a mother.

5. Building a Village

Classes offer a sense of community and shared experience. You’ll meet other local mums navigating the same joys and challenges, and those connections can be just as healing as the yoga itself.

Whether you had a vaginal birth, a caesarean, or anything in between, postnatal yoga welcomes you exactly as you are. Come as you are—tired, emotional, joyful, unsure. There is space for all of it.

Join Mariella, a Yoga instructor, Neonatal Nurse and Postnatal Transition coach in her Tuesday evening yoga classes and let’s begin this next chapter together.
